Author: Claire Dederer
Book: Poser: My Life in Twenty-three Yoga Poses
Added: February 2nd, 2011

Shiri’s comment: “I was pleasantly surprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading Claire Dederer’s journey through yoga, babies, husbands, parents, hiking, and friends. Yes, her book could easily be compared to EPL but Poser is a story of a woman who chooses to stay in a “difficult” marriage and how Claire and her family endure. I’d love to hear what anyone else thought of this modern day, family love story.”

Book: Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace
Added: February 2nd, 2011

Shiri’s comment: “If you can think of times in your life that you treated people with extraordinary decency and love, and pure uninterested concern, just because they were valuable as human beings. The ability to do that with ourselves. To treat ourselves the way we would treat a really good, precious friend. Or a tiny child that we loved more than life itself. And I think it’s probably possible to achieve that. I think part of the job we’re here for is to learn how to do it. – David Foster Wallace. What a gift this book is. I’d happily take this road trip over and over again.”

Author: Yann Martel

Added: August 28th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “If we, citizens, do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams. – Yann Martel from Life Of Pi. I’m starting to read it today. Read it with me and we can have our very own book club!!”

Author: Randy Pausch
Book: The Last Lecture
Added: July 3rd, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch has been on my night stand for the past month. I have never taken so much time getting through a book. There is so much wisdom and excitement about how to live a life on every page. If you’re in the need for a little emotional pick me up or just want to feel good with someone’s words, this is your next book.”

Author: Stieg Larsson
Book: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Added: May 28th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I have heard so many people talk about how great this book is. I’m not one to fall in love with the much hyped books (sorry, not a fan of The DaVinci Code). I reluctantly cracked Mr. Larsson’s novel open and was more than blown away. It completely captivates you, has you guessing and wondering how another 100 pages went by. This is more than a summer read. This is the read of the year (I might be getting ahead of myself but hopefully you get the point…).”

Author: Emily Griffin
Book: Baby Proof
Added: May 14th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I couldn’t help myself. I had to read another one of Emily Giffin’s novels. She is just the best at writing stories told from a really strong female point of view and not making the male’s total @#$%& (insert word of choice here). I took this one down in two days flat and loved every second of it. Definite beach bag book.”

Author: Dave Cullen
Book: Columbine
Added: May 16th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I saw it and knew it would be fascinating. What I wasn’t prepared for was how hard it would be to get through. I had to take breaks along the way of this substantial read. My heart goes out to everyone whose life was affected by this horrific tragedy. Reading Columbine is necessary in order to grasp all facets of mankind but upsetting nonetheless.”

Author: Michael Dahlie
Book: A Gentleman’s Guide to Graceful Living
Added: April 18th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “When I’m in NYC I love going to Three Lives & Company Bookstore. It’s so charming and everyone that works there is so kind and well read. It’s what every bookstore really should be. I picked up A Gentleman’s Guide To Graceful Living there last week. I opened to a random page and instantly knew this was a book I could easily fall into. The main character goes on an interesting journey of starting his life over having been recently divorced and finds himself in one crazy situation after the next. I couldn’t help but picture Charles Grodin in the role which made it that much funnier. Anyways, I really enjoyed this slice of graceful reading.”

Author: Chris Cleave
Book: Little Bee
Added: March 26th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I can’t tell you what this book is about – the author makes the request on the back cover – but I can tell you it’s an incredible read that somehow just makes you feel good. You become so immersed in the world of these characters because the story is fueled with the most beautiful description. I know I’ll be thinking and talking about this book for some time. It’s really special.”

Author: Gene Wilder
Book: Kiss Me Like A Stranger
Added: March 16th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I love reading about other artists (although it feels weird referring to myself as one). I want to know about their road, how they found their inspiration and endurance during the rough times. Mr. Wilder’s book was probably one of the easiest, most enjoyable pieces of literature I’ve ever come across and I can only imagine that it’s an honest reflection of what time is like with him. I love people who love their craft and love falling in love. Mr. Wilder is my kind of guy…”

Book: Something Blue
Added: March 11th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “After countless girlfriends told me these books were their guilty reads, I took the plunge and jumped right in. They were so right. I love the characters in these books. They make mistakes, they do awful things and somehow have us cheering from them. One of my favorite passages from something blue…”Love and friendship. They are what make us who we are, and what can change us, if we let them. ” I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

Author: Jennifer Belle
Book: Little Stalker
Added: March 7th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “Last week I went to Cabo for a little R and R. Liz Tigelaar said I absolutely had to bring Little Stalker with me. The main character is obsessed with Little House on the Prairie – if that’s any indication. I got completely sucked in to this world and even found myself amazed with the little gems of insight on every page. A great beach bag book!”

Book: Game Change
Added: March 7th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I will be very honest. I am a political junkie. It’s like the obsession people have with US Weekly. I totally get it. Last years election dragged me in (won’t even dare comment on my opinions, just know I have them). I even had a Super Tuesday party at my house. Now, almost needless to say, I had a hard time putting Game Change down. It was really eye opening – in the way that going backstage is. I loved hearing how different the politicians were compared to their public personas. They’re better than most actors!”

Author: David Sheff
Book: Beautiful Boy
Added: February 26th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I read David Sheff’s article in the New York Times magazine a few years ago and was completely drawn in. Reading his book had the same effect on me. I just bought his son’s book Tweak and know it’ll be another gripping story. Mr. Sheff writes so vividly, he paints an entire world of love and suffering for you to experience.”

Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
Book: Committed
Added: January 28th, 2010

Shiri’s comment: “I just finished Elizabeth Gilbert’s follow up to ‘Eat, Pray, Love.’ Her first book was such a significant book for so many that I was nervous that she wouldn’t be able to have a strong follow up. Let me make it clear, I have spent the few minutes I have to myself with this book. She is like the best friend you have that can’t help but tell you the truth. all of it.”

Author: Craig Ferguson
Book: American on Purpose
Added: December 23rd, 2009

Shiri’s comment: “I have to say how much I loved living in Mr. Ferguson’s world. Yes he’s funny but he is surprisingly spiritual. He lets you in on the low moments of his life and how he found the inspiration to rise above it, time and time again. He’s the real deal.”

Author: Nick Hornby
Book: Juliet, Naked
Added: November 11th, 2009

Shiri’s comment: “I’m a huge Nick Hornby fan. It’s so easy to spend days in his world. His characters are so real and flawed and honest. I also loved a ‘Long Way Down’ and ‘Slam’. If you’re looking for a good winter read, this could be it.”
