Shiri Appleby takes part in the charity stunt to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Unless you spent the last several weeks on a desert island, you have most probably heard about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. #icebucketchallenge

With numerous celebrities, entrepreneurs, and talk show hosts ranging from Bill Gates, Oprah, and Mark Zuckerberg to Justin Timberlake, Tom Cruise, and Lady Gaga having participated, the campaign has quickly turned into a social media phenomenon.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been an extraordinary success. According to a press release on ASLA.org, the national ALS Association has so far received $53.3. million in donations compared to $2.2 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21).

Shiri accepted the challenge from former „Army Wives” star Sally Pressman. She nominated Sarah Hendler, Ashlee Margolis, and her Un-Real co-star Constance Zimmer.

Make a difference!

Let’s not forget the cause behind the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge is meant to raise money for the national ALS Association, which raises awareness and promote research for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which affects nerve cells in the brain and spine. As the cells die, the victim loses motor functions, leading to paralysis while the mind is still intact.

You don’t necessarily have to dump a bucket of water over your head to make a difference. If you want to contribute to a good cause, whether to the ALS Association or to some other charity of your choice, just make a donation. And if it’s an organization you really believe in, feel free to politely encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Your turn. Donate.
